Established 2002 — specialist technical cleaning for critical IT environments.

If you are approaching the handover of a new data centre, data hall or refurbishment project, involve the technical cleaning team before the room goes live — not after construction contamination has already entered the equipment.

Post-Construction Contamination in Data Centres

A data hall can look clean at handover while significant particulate contamination remains on racks, cable management, floor voids and other horizontal surfaces.

The photographs above show fine construction dust deposited inside a newly installed IT cabinet. This is particularly important because these surfaces sit directly within the airflow path of critical IT equipment.

Why Does It Matter?

Construction and refurbishment can generate fine particulate from plasterboard, concrete, drilling, cutting, insulation and general building activity. Construction contamination should not simply be treated as ordinary office dust.Depending on the work undertaken, it may contain mineral particles, gypsum/plaster residues, concrete and silica-containing material, fibres and metallic debris. These contaminants can be abrasive and can accumulate within cooling and electronic equipment. Post-construction contamination is also recognised as a potential problem for HVAC performance and the circulation of particulate through critical environments.

The objective should therefore be to remove contamination before it has an opportunity to migrate further into the operating environment.

Once cooling systems and IT equipment become operational, deposited particles can be re-entrained into the data hall airflow and transported towards equipment air intakes.

Server and switch fans can then draw this contamination through the equipment chassis, potentially resulting in:

  • restricted heatsinks and filters;
  • reduced cooling efficiency;
  • contamination of PCBs and electronic components;
  • increased thermal stress;
  • abrasive or conductive deposits; and
  • increased equipment reliability risk.

A Builders Clean Is Not a Technical Clean

A builders clean is primarily intended to remove construction debris and gross contamination.

A post-construction technical clean should target the residual fine particulate contamination remaining within the critical environment, including:

rack structures → cable management → cabinet surfaces → floor void → cooling infrastructure → airflow paths

Cleaning should therefore be completed before the data hall becomes fully operational, wherever possible.

Clean — Then Validate

Visual cleanliness alone cannot confirm the airborne cleanliness of a data hall.

Following post-construction technical cleaning, airborne particle concentrations can be measured and classified against ISO 14644-1 Class 8, providing objective evidence of the environmental condition at handover.

The photographs demonstrate an important principle:

If you can see construction dust inside the rack before the equipment is installed, consider where that particulate will go once thousands of cubic metres of cooling air begin moving through the data hall. For SCOPE of Works (SOW)
