Visible contamination around ports, ventilation openings, fan inlets and exhaust areas can provide an indication of what equipment has been exposed to during its operational life. Contamination may also be present internally and within cooling-air pathways.

1. Assess
Consider the equipment’s previous operating environment, age, contamination history and proposed destination. Equipment arriving from a controlled Data Centre may present a very different contamination condition from equipment previously operated in an office server room, legacy facility, industrial environment or storage area.
2. Inspect
Inspect incoming equipment for evidence of accumulated particulate contamination, particularly around fan inlets and outlets, ventilation grilles, filters, power supplies, ports, connection areas and accessible cooling-air pathways.
3. Clean if Required
Where contamination is identified, specialist technical cleaning can be undertaken in a designated staging or controlled area before the equipment enters the live Data Hall. Internal equipment cleaning can also be undertaken where equipment is powered down and appropriate IT support is available.
4. Record
The cleaning process can be documented, providing the Data Centre operator, migration specialist or customer with a record of the work undertaken and any significant contamination identified.
5. Release
Once the agreed contamination-control process has been completed, equipment can be released for installation within the receiving environment.
6. Install
The migration team can proceed with re-racking, cabling, testing and recommissioning.
Contamination control becomes a defined part of the migration process rather than an issue discovered after installation.
Not All Contamination Is Ordinary Dust
Particulate contamination within IT environments can originate from numerous sources.
In addition to general dust and fibres, some environments can contain electrically conductive particles, including metallic debris and zinc whiskers.
Zinc whiskers are microscopic conductive filaments associated with certain zinc-electroplated materials historically used within some raised-floor Data Centre environments.
If zinc whiskers detach, they can become airborne and potentially enter IT equipment through its cooling airflow.
Equipment manufacturers including IBM and Dell publish environmental guidance addressing conductive contamination and zinc whiskers because of the potential risk conductive particles present to electronic equipment.
IT Cleaning Ltd does not assume that visible contamination is zinc-whisker contamination.
However, equipment arriving from another facility brings with it a contamination history that the receiving Data Centre may not know.
Inspection and appropriate contamination control before installation provide an opportunity to address that unknown before the equipment enters its new environment.
